Blue Flag

The first Blue Flag sports beach in America

On December 1, 2025, Salinas del Rey made history: the Blue Flag flew over 1 km of Atlantic coastline, making it the first sports beach in the entire American continent—and the tenth in Colombia—to receive Blue Flag certification from the Foundation for Environmental Education. This seal guarantees water quality, safety, universal accessibility, and world-class environmental management. In addition, the GKA Kite World Tour has been held here since 2022.

Coastal narrative

A day at the coast

This is how you spend a perfect day on the Atlantic beaches. From dawn to dusk, without filters.

The early start that's worth it

7:00 AM

The early start that's worth it

You leave Barranquilla with the windows down and vallenato music playing on the radio. It's 20 minutes to Pradomar and 50 to Puerto Velero. The fishermen from Solinilla have returned with the day's catch, and the seagulls are celebrating. The air changes: it smells of salt, clean breeze, the real Caribbean. The sun is just beginning to warm up, and the beach is yours.

When the wind picks up

The northeast trade winds arrive right on time. Kites begin to fly in Puerto Velero—25 knots of steady wind over flat water. In Salinas del Rey, the Blue Flag zone is perfect for paddle boarding. The water is 30°C: you don't need a wetsuit, just enthusiasm. The instructors at 33 Knots have everything ready.

Ceviche, beer, and sea breeze

Lunch at a kiosk in Caño Dulce: fried fish with patacón and coconut lemonade. Or if you want something more upscale, Klimandiaro Sunset Lounge in Pradomar with cocktails that rival those in Cartagena. Feet in the sand, always. The sun is strong, but the breeze makes up for it. This is how you eat in the Caribbean.

The sky turns orange over the Caribbean and everyone pulls out their cell phones, but no photo does it justice. La Ventana de Sueños in Sabanilla glows in the last light of day. Golden hour for free, every day, 365 days a year. You leave with sand on your feet, salt on your skin, and the certainty that you will return.

Capital of kitesurfing in the Colombian Caribbean

Want to fly? Literally. Puerto Velero is THE mecca of kitesurfing in the Colombian Caribbean. Northeast trade winds averaging 25 knots with gusts of 30-35, a bay with flat water and no waves so you can learn at your own pace, and La Punta for those who have already mastered the sport. IKO-certified schools such as 33 Knots and Kite Puerto Velero teach you from scratch. The marina has accommodation, restaurants, and everything you need to stay for several days. And keep in mind: outside the bay, there are waves for advanced surfers.
